1906-2006 Testimonies and Postage from the International Olympic Games Athens 1906
In the frames of the Track and Field exhibition titled “On your marks…” and with the occasion of the completion of 100 years from the International Olympic Games that were held in 1906 in Athens, Sport Museum, with the contribution of the Hellenic Society of Olympic philately and memorabilia, presents the exhibition “1906-2006 Testimonies and Postage from the International Olympic Games Athens 1906”.
Facing the danger of degeneration of the Games, due to their co-organization with International Exhibitions, and following an older proposition of Dimitrios Vikelas to hold in Athens “intermediate” Olympic Games, with which also agreed the Crown Prince Constantine, the Games were held in Athens in 1906, with the completion of ten years from the revival of the first Olympics. Many publications followed the organizing.
In the beginnings of 1905 the official Program of the Games was published and followed the special regulations of the sports in Greek and French. Among the publications stands the General Program, where are reported the names of the participating athletes, the 2nd Olympic series of Postages, which was accompanied by the first memorial philatelic Olympic Stamps, the “Olympic Games Committee Card, in Athens”, the first magazine in the world of the National Olympic Committee.
The exhibits consist important testimonies, parts of internationally acknowledged and awarded collections. In particular, the participating collectors are G. Dolianitis, M, Tsironis, Ch. Pateras and D.Mpontikoulis, presenting historic testimonies, postages, cartes – postales and photographs.
